Tragedy struck Nepal’s Dolakha district on Monday when a massive avalanche hit the base camp of Yalung Ri peak in the Rolwaling Valley, leaving at least seven climbers dead and several others missing. The 5,630-metre-high mountain, popular among adventure seekers, turned deadly as snow and ice swept through the area without warning.
According to reports, the victims include three American nationals, one Canadian, one Italian, and two Nepali climbers. Four others sustained injuries, while rescue teams continue to search for four missing individuals amid challenging weather conditions.
Local authorities, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Gyan Kumar Mahato, have launched coordinated rescue operations with the help of mountain guides and helicopters. The incident has once again highlighted the increasing risks faced by mountaineers as unpredictable weather patterns continue to trigger avalanches across the Himalayas.
Nepal, home to several of the world’s tallest peaks, witnesses numerous climbing tragedies each year despite safety efforts.
