BBC Studios is set to transform the in-flight entertainment landscape with the launch of the first fully rights-cleared streaming platform developed specifically for airlines. Partnering with Panasonic Avionics, the new service, dubbed BBC Player, will allow passengers to stream BBC content directly during flights, marking a significant step in expanding the studio’s commercial reach.
BBC Player will feature multiple content sections, including BBC Earth, BBC News, BritBox, as well as dedicated children’s sections such as BBC Kids and CBeebies. BBC Studios describes the player as the first fully rights-cleared streaming platform for airlines, reflecting the company’s strategic push to increase commercial revenue as traditional license fee income faces pressure.
“Launching BBC Player with Panasonic later this year will be transformative for the inflight entertainment industry,” said Zina Neophytou, SVP Out of Home and BBC Commercial News at BBC Studios. “BBC Studios continues to drive innovation and is the first studio to bring air travellers a state-of-the-art, fully rights cleared streaming platform, whenever and wherever they fly.”
Neophytou highlighted how BBC Player aims to enhance the passenger experience. “Passengers will enjoy a continuously evolving library of the best stories from the BBC, enhancing their inflight experience with a service they will instantly recognise, trust and love,” she added.
The initiative aligns with BBC Studios’ broader objective of maximizing commercial returns while maintaining the BBC brand’s integrity. As outlined in the recent BBC Annual Plan, expanding commercial ventures like BBC Player has become a key priority in light of declining license fee revenues.
