New Delhi: Canada deported 3,323 Indian nationals between January and June 2026, nearly 88 per cent of the 3,779 Indians removed during the whole of 2025.
If the current pace continues, 2026 could mark Canada’s highest annual number of Indian deportations in at least six years.
India has also become the largest nationality group among those deported this year, overtaking Mexico, which recorded 1,573 removals. Canada deported 603 Indians in 2021, 786 in 2022, 1,132 in 2023 and 2,004 in 2024.
Indian nationals may be removed for visa overstays, rejected asylum or refugee claims, non-compliance with immigration rules or visa-related fraud.
However, Canadian authorities do not provide a nationality-wise breakdown of specific removal grounds.
The surge comes as Ottawa tightens immigration rules and reduces temporary residents, including international students and workers. Indians also represent the largest nationality in Canada’s removal-in-progress inventory, with 7,669 cases awaiting removal.
The trend coincides with declining Indian student arrivals.
Their share of incoming international students fell to 8.1 per cent in September 2025 from 51.6 per cent in 2023, while Indian students choosing Canada dropped 41 per cent between 2023 and 2024.
