Four people were killed and nine others injured in a shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University in the southern Philippines on Tuesday, according to the National Bureau of Investigation.
The victims included two security guards and two high school students, one of whom was identified as the suspected shooter.
Authorities said the suspect was a male fourth-year high school student. Police are investigating how he managed to bring firearms onto the university campus.
The Department of Education expressed concern over the incident and said it was coordinating psychological first-aid and psychosocial support for affected students, families and school personnel.
The university said its Grade School students were safe and accounted for, while classes for Senior High School students were suspended.
Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr directed authorities to coordinate with the university and other agencies to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Police said the situation was under control and urged parents and guardians to remain calm and follow the school’s instructions while the circumstances surrounding the shooting are being investigated.
