The iPhone 17 Pro Max has achieved a major milestone by becoming part of Artemis II, marking the first time iPhones have been used by astronauts in space.
Four devices were carried onboard, allowing crew members to capture photos and videos during the mission. According to NASA, the smartphones were approved after undergoing a strict multi-stage safety evaluation process, which included identifying potential risks and ensuring all safety measures were effective.
Apple clarified that it was not involved in NASA’s approval procedure. The agency also confirmed that the devices operate with restrictions, including no internet connectivity or Bluetooth usage.
The smartphone features enhanced durability with advanced protective glass on both front and back, designed to withstand extreme conditions.
Artemis II is the first crewed mission under NASA’s Artemis program, aiming to test human capability for deep space travel beyond the Moon.
