Iran on Wednesday strongly condemned the joint US-Saudi precision strikes on targets in Iraq, calling them a violation of Iraqi sovereignty and international law.
In a statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the attacks targeted facilities belonging to official Iraqi institutions as well as processions and stations linked to Arbaeen pilgrims. It described the strikes as “criminal, inhumane and provocative actions.”
“The aggressive attacks by the US and Saudi Arabia are a clear attack on the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq and a gross violation of the United Nations Charter and fundamental principles of international law,” the ministry said.
Iran also expressed condolences over the deaths of Iraqi nationals in the strikes and reiterated its support for the Iraqi government and people.
Accusing the United States and Israel of attempting to widen conflict in West Asia, Tehran held Washington and its regional allies responsible for the consequences of the attacks.
The statement came after the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that the Saudi Arabian Armed Forces and CENTCOM had jointly carried out precision strikes against Iran-aligned militant sites in Iraq, targeting logistics and weapons facilities.
