New Delhi: Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday for a two-day BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting amid rising tensions in West Asia and concerns over global energy security.
The meeting, hosted by India as the current BRICS chair, comes at a crucial time following a fragile ceasefire between Iran and the United States after recent Israeli and American strikes. Fresh allegations of violations in the Strait of Hormuz have further heightened regional tensions.
Araghchi’s visit, his first to India since the latest hostilities, highlights Tehran’s efforts to strengthen ties within the expanded BRICS bloc, which Iran joined as a full member alongside Egypt and Ethiopia.
During bilateral talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, discussions are expected to focus on the safe passage of Indian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said 11 Indian-linked ships had already crossed the strait, while 13 vessels remain in the region.
India imports a significant share of its LNG through the Strait of Hormuz, making stability in the region critical for energy prices and economic security.
The BRICS meeting is also expected to address multilateral cooperation and economic resilience. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is likely to attend, while China’s Wang Yi will skip the event due to scheduling conflicts linked to US President Donald Trump’s Beijing visit.
