Kenya: Violent protests broke out in the Kenyan town of Nanyuki on Tuesday over the construction of a US-backed Ebola quarantine facility, leaving at least one person shot and several others affected during clashes with police.
The facility, being built at Laikipia Air Base, is intended to quarantine American citizens arriving from the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is currently facing a major Ebola outbreak.
Many residents have opposed the project, arguing that Kenya has never recorded an Ebola case and expressing concerns about bringing potential carriers of the disease into the country.
Demonstrators took to the streets, setting fires and throwing stones, while security forces responded with tear gas and water cannons. Gunshots were also reported during the unrest. AFP journalists witnessed a man lying motionless after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head. The Red Cross said another individual was injured by a tear gas canister.
Several people were arrested as authorities moved to contain the protests.
