The escalating crisis in the Middle East deepened over the weekend as Russia condemned the United States for launching missile strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, calling it a “flagrant violation” of international law. The rebuke came in the wake of the U.S. military’s Sunday assault on three underground Iranian nuclear sites.
In a sharply worded statement, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said, “The irresponsible decision to subject the territory of a sovereign state to missile and bomb attacks, whatever the arguments it may be presented with, flagrantly violates international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.”
As tensions soar, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to visit Moscow on Monday for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to reports. Speaking in Istanbul ahead of the visit, Araghchi underlined the “strategic partnership” between Tehran and Moscow, stating, “We always consult with each other and coordinate our positions.”
The U.S. strikes, described by President Donald Trump as “massive precision attacks,” targeted suspected nuclear development sites in Iran. Addressing the nation from the White House, Trump warned of further military action if Iran does not de-escalate. “Peace is still an option, but if Iran continues on this path, consequences will follow,” he declared.
Iran swiftly condemned the strikes, accusing Washington of violating international norms and interfering in its sovereign affairs. Tehran also reaffirmed its commitment to continue its nuclear program, brushing aside the U.S. threats.
