Kampala: Uganda has confirmed six new Ebola cases, taking the total number of confirmed infections in the ongoing outbreak to 15, the Ministry of Health said on Tuesday, according to the news agency.
The new infections were detected among contacts of previously confirmed patients. The ministry said 12 patients are currently admitted to treatment centres, while two have recovered and been discharged. The outbreak was declared in May after two imported Ebola Virus Disease cases, including one fatality.
Authorities are monitoring 668 contacts linked to confirmed cases as part of containment efforts. Director General of Health Services Charles Olaro urged people with Ebola-like symptoms to seek medical care early, noting that prompt reporting increases survival chances.
Health authorities have intensified contact tracing, surveillance, and public awareness campaigns to prevent further transmission.
Meanwhile, India has dispatched a second tranche of medical assistance to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), comprising protective gear, diagnostic and monitoring equipment, medicines, and nutritional supplements.
The 43-tonne consignment aims to strengthen Ebola response and public health preparedness across Africa.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on X that India is confident the support will bolster response capacities. Earlier, on May 24, India had sent the first tranche of urgent medical supplies and protective kits to Africa CDC.
