Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), on Saturday visited Bunia in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where a severe Ebola outbreak has been declared.
WHO’s Director General told reporters in Bunia, capital of Ituri province, that the international community was helping the DRC government cope with the outbreak, but “at the same time, community ownership is important”.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that was the reason for his trip: “We are here to discuss with the community, to see how the response is running and if there are challenges to help.”
The visit comes amid ongoing efforts to contain the outbreak and strengthen the response in affected areas. Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, has become a key location for coordination and treatment activities linked to the health emergency.
During his visit, the WHO chief is expected to inaugurate a large Ebola treatment centre in Bunia. The facility has been established as a permanent building rather than simple tents, marking a significant development in the region’s healthcare infrastructure and response capabilities.
The moves come as the World Health Organisation has declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) following the latest outbreak.
According to available figures, the outbreak has claimed 246 lives among more than 1,000 suspected cases.
The WHO and international partners have been supporting the Democratic Republic of Congo in its efforts to respond to the outbreak, while health authorities continue to monitor and manage cases in affected communities.
Speaking to reporters, Tedros emphasised the importance of local involvement alongside international assistance.
