The BRICS grouping is set to hold its 18th summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, with India hosting the meeting under its 2026 chairship. However, China has not yet confirmed whether President Xi Jinping will attend the summit.
At a regular briefing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Beijing places high importance on BRICS cooperation and supports India in successfully hosting the summit. However, she did not provide any information on who would represent China at the meeting.
India had invited Xi Jinping to the summit during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China in August 2025. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Modi extended the invitation for the BRICS meeting, while Xi thanked him and conveyed China’s support for India’s chairship of the grouping.
Despite the invitation, Xi’s participation has not been confirmed by Beijing. As of September 8, China has not publicly stated whether Xi will personally lead the country’s delegation to New Delhi.
