Bhutan votes in favour of Information Act

Date:

Thimpu: Bhutan’s National Assembly has passed the Right to Information Bill on Tuesday. Minister of Information and Communications Lynpo D N Dhungyel said the RTI Act would promote transparency and accountability of the government, and help curb corruption.

North Thimpu’s representative Kinga Tshering said although he appreciated the efforts of the legislative committee, he was dissatisfied with the passing of the Bill as only about 50% of the recommendations were accepted by the house.

The Bill was voted in favour by 32 members out of 40 present. Four members abstained from the vote while four others voted against the Bill. The Act will not be reviewed by the council.
