Top achievers may pay a dear price

Date:

Washington: A new study by authors Jingjing Ma and Neal J. Roese has found that being a high achiever can amplify negative feelings, like regret and dissatisfaction. The duo from North-western University found individuals with the ‘must have the best’ mind-set experience more regret and being less satisfied with the products they purchase or consume.

Across seven experiments, the authors examined the impact of what they term the “maximizing mind-set” on participants’ ability to make decisions when they are feeling or behaving in a certain way.

The study showed that constantly comparing and focusing on getting the best can have a negative effect on our psychological well-being, particularly when we do not get the best, the authors added. The study is published in the Journal of Consumer Research.
