Mumbai: An evacuation process has begun after gas leak at the Bombay High oil rig off the coast of Mumbai. The Coast Guard and Indian Navy have diverted ships; helicopter company Pawan Hans too is providing assistance in evacuation.

The oil rig is situated 162 kilometres off the coast of Mumbai and is operated by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). ONGC has shut down drilling operations and has evacuated all non-essential staff.

“Everything is under control and all the personnel have been evacuated. Our crisis management team is there,” ONGC spokesperson Pallav Bhattacharya said. He added that the gas leak was reported around two hours ago.

The oil major said the leakage is minor and the evacuation has been done as a precautionary manner. ONGC also said that staff members who have been evacuated will join back in some time.
