Rahuls reality check at Amethi

Date:

Amethi:  Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday did not receive the warm welcome he may have expected from his constituency. Instead, the residents grilled him over lack of power and infrastructure in his constituency.

Rahul is currently battling criticism from within and outside the party over his leadership and political acumen. While the young brigade has backed him, the senior leadership has questioned his abilities.

On Wednesday, party president Sonia Gandhi had to step in amidst reports of a growing divide between the seniors and the young leaders. She asked the supporters of Rahul to call off a meeting they had sought to present a memo to the party general secretaries to refrain from criticising Rahul for the disastrous drubbing the Congress received in the Lok Sabha elections. Rahul had been at the forefront of the Congress’s 2014 campaign.

Dwivedi and senior leader Digvijaya Singh had earlier made remarks that included prescribing an age limit for holding active posts and concluding that Rahul should be seen more active in politics, which the young leaders said would damage the party’s interests and image.
