Five civilians die as gunfight underway near Indo-Pak border

Date:

Arnia: A terrorist hidden in a bunker in Arnia in J&K continues to exchange fire with soldiers, hours before Prime Minister Modi is to arrive in Udhampur to address an election rally.

The terrorist belongs to the group of terrorists who crossed into Jammu and were shot dead by the Army Thursday.

Top Army officials said the terrorists crossed the border as Pakistani troops violated ceasefire to provide cover.

The officials said the militants were dressed in fatigues that looked like Army uniforms.

Four civilians were killed in cross firing as the terrorists opened fire at an Army column on patrol near Arnia, two kilometers from the border.

Three soldiers and four terrorists were killed in the encounter that lasted several hours.

The attack coincided with the SAARC summit in Kathmandu which was attended by the heads of eight member nations, including PM Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif.

The summit, aimed at boosting trade in the region, was over-shadowed by the tension between the Indian and Pakistani leaders, who finally shook hands at a photo-op to mark the end of the summit after cold-shouldering each other.

Tension peaked in October when 20 civilians were killed in the worst violence in over a decade at the Kashmir border.

Jammu and Kashmir is currently polling over five days for the next government.

Polling began on Tuesday with a record turnout of nearly 72 percent. Results will be declared on December 23.
