Ammann to stay in hospital after horror ski fall

Date:

Quadruple Olympic champion Simon Ammann is to stay in hospital for a total rest after suffering severe concussion and extensive bruising in his spectacular fall in the Four Hills tournament at Bischofshofen.

“Simon Ammann has severe concussion and extensive bruising, but did not break anything,” Swiss ski authorities said Wednesday.

The Swiss star fell face-first after his second jump of 136m, his legs spread into a splits and his head slammed into the ice.

He then slid face-first and unconscious down the rest of the slope in Tuesday’s fourth and final leg of the prestige event, won by Austria’s Stefan Kraft.

“He’ll be staying in hospital at Schwarzach (Austria) for the time being where he needs total rest to get over this serious fall,” added the Swiss ski body.

The affable 33-year-old soared to fame at Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Games winning the large and small hill gold medals before repeating the feat at Vancouver in 2010.

Ammann was runner up in the Four Hills twice, in 2009 and 2011, and was third in 2014. This time out he ended 17th.
