Sharif tells Basit India and Pak need to resolve all issues

Date:

Islamabad: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit that it was important the two countries resolved all their outstanding issues.

Sharif described India as an important neighbour, on Wednesday, and said resolving issues including J&K was important to have viable peace in the region.

Basit also briefed Sharif on the status of the Pakistan-India relations, according to an official statement.

Sharif had earlier, on Monday, pledged to develop friendly relations with India on the basis of “sovereign equality, mutual respect and commonality of interests”.

His comments came during US President Barack Obama’s visit to India, which witnessed several ties being agreed upon by the two countries, like the nuclear deal and the re-invigoration defence ties.

Greeting India on its 66th Republic Day, Sharif, in a message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “We believe that our two Governments can work together towards the development of our countries, the well-being of our peoples, and achieving our common goal of peaceful and prosperous South Asia.”

India cancelled Foreign Secretary-level talks with Pakistan after Basit held talks with Kashmiri separatists just before the parleys in Islamabad August, last year.

Since then both countries have maintained that they are willing to engage in a meaningful dialogue provided the other side takes the initiative.
