Nalanda University gets a Singapore touch

Date:

Former Singapore finance minister George Yeo will take over as the Chancellor of the Nalanda University, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Saturday.

MEA official spokesperson Vikas Swarup took to twitter to share this information.

Yeo, 60, has been one of the movers of a project to revive the university, the ancient seat of learning in Bihar state, and is part of a 12-member governing board.

He takes over from Nobel prize-winning economist Amartya Sen, who stepped down in February accusing the government of political interference in the running of the university. Dr Sen will continue to serve on the board.

The economist had spearheaded efforts to revive Nalanda University which once attracted scholars from countries as far away as China and Turkey until it was burnt down by invaders in 1193.
