Java Island: A Bus carrying high school students on a graduation trip crashed in Indonesia which left 11 people dead and dozens more injured as per the Indonesian police on Sunday.
At 6:48 p.m. (local time) on Saturday, the bus carrying 60 students and teachers from the Java Island town of Depok crashed near Lembang, a well-known tourist spot. West Java state police spokesman Jules Abraham Abast told AFP on Sunday that the kids were celebrating their graduation and were on a school excursion when the school bus abruptly lost control and leaned to the left, colliding into a car and three motorbikes.
Abast said, “Out of the passengers who died, nine of them were students, and one of them was a teacher”. The accident also resulted in the death of a motorcyclist, seriously injured 13 people and caused minor injuries to 40 others. Although Abast stated that authorities are still looking into the reason for the accident, local traffic police commander Undang Syarif Hidayat told broadcaster Kompas he feared the bus’s brakes malfunctioned before the collision.
Deadly traffic accidents are very common in Indonesia, where vehicles are often very old and poorly maintained and traffic rules are constantly ignored by the people. Last month a car crashed into a bus and another car on a busy highway which left 12 people dead.
