Rain forces Sharapova into Monday match

Date:

Defending champion Maria Sharapova saw her French Open last-16 clash against Lucie Safarova pushed back until Monday after heavy rain caused havoc at Roland Garros on Sunday.

Second seed Sharapova was due to face the Czech left-hander in the last scheduled match on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

But following a two and a half hour stoppage earlier in the day and with two men’s fourth round ties still to be played, organisers decided to cancel the Russian’s match.

The fourth round tie between Garbine Muguruza and Flavia Pennetta, set to be last up on Court Philippe Chatrier, was also put back until Monday.

“The scheduled 4R matches between Sharapova-Safarova & Muguruza-Pennetta have been cancelled for today: ,” tweeted the organisers.
