Yakub moves SC against execution warrant

Date:

New Delhi: Yakub Memon, the 1993 Mumbai blasts convict, has moved Supreme Court on Thursday seeking to quash the death warrant against him by the TADA court.

Memon has claimed that relevant guidelines were not followed in the procedure of awarding death sentence to him.

Meanwhile, Memon’s family has reached Nagpur to meet him. His wife and four others will be meeting him on Thursday at the Nagpur jail.

In the run up to Mumbai serial blasts accused Memon’s hanging, special arrangements have been made by the Mumbai Police to ensure that there is no lapse in security.

To deal with any possible fallout on law and order front after the hanging of Yakub Memon, convicted in the 1993 serial bomb blasts in the metropolis, the police department will be overseeing every little detail.

Memon’s execution is slated on July 30 at Nagpur Central Jail. After the hanging, his body would be handed over to his family members, police said.

The 53-year-old’s body will be brought to his residence at Mahim in Central Mumbai.

“His burial might take place in the city,” said a police officer, requesting anonymity.

“Right from the airport to his house and at the burial ground, police will maintain tight security arrangements,” he said.

As a preventive action, police would detain some people with criminal antecedents and keep strict vigil at sensitive places in the metropolis.

Leaves of all police personnel have been cancelled till July-end, said the officer.
