Kovan sent to two-day police custody

Date:

Chennai: Tamil folk artiste Kovan, who was arrested for criticising Chief Minister Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK government over liquor issue, was sent to two-day police custody on Friday.

The Madras High Court on Tuesday had sought a reply from the Tamil Nadu Government on a petition filed by Kovan’s son, alleging that police were trying to book his father under the National Security Act.

Kovan was arrested from his residence by the Cyber Crime department on October 31 after his video went viral on social media. He was booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 124 (A), sedition.

In his controversial song, Kovan allegedly attacked the Jayalalithaa Government, saying the Chief Minister was enjoying, while the state was reeling under the influence of alcohol.

His song ‘Oorkku oorkku sarayam’ mocks liquor shops run by the state government in Tamil Nadu.

The singer also commented on her luxurious lifestyle, pointing that the common man was left to struggle.
