Thanksgiving travel amidst terror threats

Date:

Thanksgiving season, which will see millions travel home for the holidays, will see far more security and scrutiny, in the wake of the global warning from the US State Department.

The events in the run up to Thanksgiving, namely, the bombing of a Russian jet, the Paris attacks and the fierce retaliation has placed the world on high alert. On Monday, the State Department warned that Islamic militants are planning attacks in “multiple regions”.

A State Department spokesman said on Tuesday that while it did not want to discourage travel, it only encouraged Americans “to be very prudent, very vigilant.” According to reports, there is specific threat to transportation networks, but the precautions and safeguards are in place.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, has placed its police force on “heightened alert” at all its facilities. Safeguards include increased patrols and checks of bags, buses, trucks and trains.

“We encourage travelers to be vigilant & report any suspicious activity to law enforcement,” the agency tweeted Tuesday.

“If you see something, say something.”
