Modi-Putin jointly dedicate first unit of Kudankulam nuclear plant

Date:

India and Russia jointly dedicated the first unit of Kudankulam nuclear plant on Wednesday over Video Conferencing.

The contract was signed nearly three decades ago– a period within which USSR collapsed and 10 governments were changed at the centre.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa will jointly dedicate it to the nation. The first unit was synchronised with the southern power grid in 2013 and the commercial power generation started by the end of December 2014. Eventually, other units will be functional, with works close to the functioning of the second unit.

The biggest challenge in fulfilment of this project was the protest from the people of the coastal villages surrounding it. The protests had erupted more vociferously when the Fukushima leak occurred in Japan.

This has considerably increased the cost of the reactor.
