Heavy rush at Kerala temples on first day of Chingam

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 17 (PTI) Temples in Keralawere thronged by large number of devotees this early morningcommemorating the first day of the Malayalam New Year,Chingam. The auspicious first day in the Malayalam calendar iswelcomed by special prayers and ceremonies. The hill shrine of Lord Ayyappa was opened last eveningfor the monthly pooja for Chingam. Padmanabha Swamy and Pazhavangadi Lord GaneshaPazhavangadi temples here witnessed a heavy rush of pilgrimson the occasion. Chingam is also of great significance as Onam, thebiggest fesitval in Kerala, is celebrated in this month. Kerala Governor Justice (Retd) P Sathasivam greetedMalayalees all over the world on the occasion of Chingam whichhonours the contributions of the farmers who strive to sustainthe agricultural tradition of the state.
