Karnal Singh gets another 6-month extension as ED Director

New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) Karnal Singh, Special Director inthe Enforcement Directorate (ED), today got his thirdextension to hold additional charge as head of the financialprobe agency for another six months. Extension to Singh, a 1984 batch IPS officer of UT cadre,was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. The post had fell vacant after the government had inAugust last year curtailed the tenure of Rajan S Katoch, theprevious Director of Enforcement Directorate (ED). According to the notification, Singh will continue to holdthe additional charge of the post of Enforcement Director fora further period of six months beyond August 19, or tillappointment of a regular incumbent to that post. Singh was on August 19, 2015 given the additional chargeof the post for three months and his tenure was extended inNovember by another three months, and later in February by sixmonths. The agency has a mandate to enforce two of the moststringent laws in the country – Prevention of Money LaunderingAct (PMLA) and Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) – tocheck black money and hawala trade cases.
