Mobile app aimed at women safety launched

Hyderabad, Aug 23 (PTI) A mobile application aimed atsafety of women and works without GPRS and Internet waslaunched here today. The app "I Feel Safe" was launched by parents of theDecember 2012 Delhi gangrape victim. They are participating in a two-day First InternationalConference on ‘Exploring Modern Science and TechnologySolutions for Humanity. Education and Rights’, arelease issued here stated. The mobile app is powered by Nirbhaya Jyoti Trust, aninstitute formed to assist women who have experienced violenceto find shelter and legal assistance. It is a personal safety application for smartphoneusers developed in association with Mobile Standards Allianceof India. The app places an automatic call to the national emergencynumber 100 and the location of the potential victim is trackedevery 30 seconds and made available to their emergencycontacts, emergency call centre team, who then reach out toprovide support, to overcome the emergency situation, therelease said. The highlight of the app is it works without GPRSand Internet. The app instantly adds a virtual panic button. Mobilephone owners can simply press the "Safety Ka Power Button"five times to activate an alarm. It works across India on all mobile networks and sendsnear real-time updates about the location of the mobileuser. "Ever since the Nirbhaya incident happened, we arefully dedicated to the Trust. We help other victims fight. Wealso see to it that no girl ever has to go through what ourdaughter has gone through," Nirbhaya’s parents said. "We need to use technology to ensure safety of women. Ifthe present day technology was available my daughter wouldhave been saved. She tried to make a call through her mobilebut it was snatched away by the culprits," they added.PTI VVK NSKAQSJMF
