New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI) The Delhi High Court today askedthe Centre to consider enhancing the salaries of Delhi policepersonnel to bring them at par with the Chandigarh Police. A bench of justices G S Sistani and I S Mehta told theMinistry of Home Affairs to consider Delhi police constableBabu Lal Mitharwal plea for ‘equal pay for equal work’ as arepresentation and take a decision on it within three months. With the direction, the court disposed of the plea ofMitharwal, who had contended that Chandigarh Police personnelwere being paid more salary despite undertaking similarduties. He had said that police constables in Delhi andChandigarh hold identical posts under the same cadrecontrolling authority with similar responsibilities. While the salaries of constables of Delhi Police fell inthe pay band of Rs 5,200-20,200 and grade of Rs 2,000, theircounterparts in Chandigarh Police got Rs 10,300-34,800 and agrade pay of Rs 3,200, his plea had said. The petition had also said the basic qualification,method of recruitment and level of physical standards beingthe same for both forces, there can be no discrimination. It had claimed that the nature of the job of Delhi Policewas much more arduous as compared to Chandigarh Police owingto the enhanced risks in discharge of duties.
