Production in Tata Steel, Tata Motors not affected by strike

Jamshedpur, Sep 2 (PTI) Production in the factories ofTata Steel and Tata Motors was normal while banking serviceswere badly hit by the one-day nationwide strike called byseveral trade unions in the mineral-rich Kolhan region,comprising East and West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharswandistricts of Jharkhand. Production as well as attendance at Tata Steel and TataMotors factories were normal during the strike, Amresh Sinhaof Corporate Services, Tata Steel and Ranjit Dhar, spokesmanof Tata Motors, told PTI. The banking services were "badly affected" in the threedistricts by the strike called by the trade unions to presstheir 12-point charter of demand, including minimum wages,secretary, All India Bank Employees’ Association, Jharkhand, RSingh said. The strike affected transactions worth about Rs 1,200crore as all the banks, barring one, had joined it, Singh saidwhile accusing the Union government of "overlooking theirgenuine demands". President of Adityapur Small Industries Association (ASIA)Inder Agarwal said the strike evoked a "lukewarm" response inthe Adityapur industrial area, the largest industrial estatein the eastern region, in adjoining Seraikela-Kharswandistrict. Agarwal said some contract labourers were detained outsidethe Usha Martin plant at Gamariah, but the production was notaffected. Mining activities in the Kolhan region were "partiallyaffected", sources said. The administration had made elaborate securityarrangements to maintain law-and-order but the strike waslargely "incident-free", they added. PTI BS SUSRC
