The Supreme Court on Thursday prohibited liquor shops on highways from April. The license of existing shops will not be renewed.
The apex court said that Liquor shops need to be at least 500 metres away from state and national highways and asked to remove liquor banners and ads.

The orders have to be implemented by the Chief Secretary and police chiefs of states.
The apex court added that banning liquor shops along highways will help in safety and security of commuters who get distracted, which results in accidents.

The court was hearing petitions challenging various high court verdicts which held that liquor shops be located at a distance from state highways so that they are neither visible nor accessible to the commuters.
