Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Verma appointed as new CBI chief

Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Verma was appointed as the next chief of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday. Earlier it was reported that in key appointment Delhi Police commissioner Alok Kumar Verma is all set to become the next director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Reportedly a formal announcement was expected later on Monday. His appointment was approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a period of 2 years. He will succeed Rakesh Asthana whose tenure ends shortly.

Sources said the government placed three names before the panel — also comprising Chief Justice JS Khehar and Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge — for consideration.

He has also served Delhi Police in number of positions, including Deputy Commissioner of Police, South District, Joint Commissioner of the Crime Branch, Joint Commissioner of Police, New Delhi Range, Special CP (Intelligence) and Special CP, Vigilance.

He had served as the Inspector General of Police in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Director General of Police (DGP) of Puducherry. Verma, a 1979 batch Indian Police Service officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre, had a higher grading and was the senior-most among the shortlisted candidates. He was the Delhi Police chief for the last 11 months.
