Rampant killing of Elephants for meat in Arunachal and Assam

On May 1 this year a mutilated carcass of a wild tusker was found on the roads of Nagaon, which is 130 km from Assam‘s capital Guwahati. Tuskless dead body was a usual sight, but this came as a surprise to the locals.

“The elephant tusk is known as the tastiest part of an elephant for most of the tribals, but in recent times jumbo meat is also making an entry into the tribals list of delicacy”. ” Karbi Tribe of Kaziranga elephant reserve is to be known for their fancy of “Jumbo meat”. Gaaro, Dimana, Adivasis also indulge into eating Elephant’s trunk”. said a veterinarian.

“The elephants are already been hunted for its tusk and Ivory, further adopting Jumbo Meat to make it as a delicacy could rapidly decrease the count of the species in the fauna rich reserves of Kaziranga”.The Jumbo meat is now being sold on the market using different names”. said a member of Assam Wildlife Board.

Despite being in the category of schedule 1 species in wildlife protection Act, 1972, the gruesome killing continues of such big beautiful animals.

Only 3000 elephants are left as of now in the region in comparison t 4000 to 5000 in 2014 according to the reports by the forest officials.
