Suicide bombers strike Indonesia; President orders thorough investigation

Date:

Indonesia’s president, Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, has ordered a thorough investigation of the network behind two suicide bombings that targeted police in the capital and killed three police officers.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo offered deep condolences for the victims and their families. The twin bombings on Wednesday night also injured five other police officers and five civilians. The two bombers were killed.

Indonesia has faced an emerging threat in recent years from Islamic State group sympathizers who have launched attacks targeting government authorities, mainly police and anti-terrorism forces.

The blasts on Wednesday are the deadliest since January 2016 when four militants killed four civilians using guns and bombs in Jakarta.

The government authorities are wary of the ISIS threat increasing in Indonesia, with 400 Indonesian citizens having gone to Syria to join the ISIS.

The recent attack follows the Manchester attack in the UK and the lockdown of the city of Marawi in Philippines and shows the increased activity of ISIS in carrying out global terror.
