Chandigarh cop takes Sholay scene too far

Thirty-nine year old Virender Singh, a police constable, died in Chandigarh while imitating a Sholay stunt. The shocking incident took place on Saturday night at an electronic store in village Makhand, the constable’s hometown. The deceased was accompanied by some of his friends when he was hit by a bullet from his own revolver. Virender is survived by a wife, son and a daughter.

According to Sub Inspector Raj Kumar, SHO of Uchana Police Station, Virender was under the influence of alcohol and the incident took place at 9:30 P.M. The deceased constable carried a .32 bore licensed revolver with which he shot himself while imitating the famous scene from Sholay in which Gabbar Singh delivers the dialogue “Ab tera kya hoga Kaliya?” He removed five bullets from the revolver and left in one, put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger. He had performed the stunt several times before successfully; however, this time luck was not quite with him and the bullet pierced through his head leaving him dead on the spot.

Virender Singh was cremated at Makhand village and police have registered the crime under section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code to carry out inquest proceedings under the executive magistrate. The horrific incident highlights how a fan took extreme measures to imitate a dangerous movie stunt and lost his life.
