First Zimbabwe now Bangladesh, Sri Lanka’s miseries pile up

Date:

Days after losing to Zimbabwe in their first match of the tri-series, Sri Lanka uncovered new lows as Bangladesh thrashed them by 163 runs to register their biggest win in terms of runs.

A team which looked favourite to qualify for the final before the series started is finding itself languishing on the bottom of the points table and is looking as awful as they have ever looked in past few months.

It was a day where Bangladesh did no wrong. They won the toss, opted to bat first and piled up 320 runs in 50 overs.

Openers Anamul Haque and Tamim Iqbal added 71 runs for the first wicket before Haque fell. Tamim then went on to score 84 runs and added 99 runs with Shakib al Hasan for the second wicket before being dismissed by Akila Dananjaya. Shakib, who scored 67 from 63 balls, then added 57 runs with Mushfiqur Rahim, another batsman who scored a half century(62). The duo upped the ante and increased the run scoring rate. Sabbir Rahman then played a cameo of 24 from 12 balls to help Bangla Tigers reach 320.

While Tamim was the top scorer, Thisara Perera picked up 3 wickets. Nuwan Pradeep picked up 2 while Dananjaya and Gunaratne got one each.

In reply, Sri Lanka had an awful started. They lost Kusal Perera for just 2. Upul Tharanga and Kusal Mendis tried to steady the innings with a 41-run stand but both departed one after the other and the increasing pressure for maintaining required run rate meant that they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and folded for 157 in 32.2 overs.

Thisara Perera was the top scorer with 29 runs from just 14 balls while Shakib picked up 3 wickets. Rubel Hossain also accounted for a couple of wickets.
