Kim’s hug, what it means for India and the world

Date:

One of the landmarks in global affairs happened today when months after quiet diplomacy steered by the US, Kim Jong Un met the South Korean President in a landmark event that ended the 65 year hostility between the two Koreas.

The two, signed the “Panmunjom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification on the Korean Peninsula,” at the demilitarized zone (DMZ), after an historic day of meetings
Why is this important.

Even though there is still ambiguity on denuclearisation it brings a nuclear rogue state to the global mainstream.

This saved the world from the being of a nuclear conflict. This will also ensure greater stability to the Korean Peninsula and beyond.

While China which has been elbowed out of the present negotiations a final settlement will have to see its involvement.

Strategically for countries like India this also opens new vistas for cooperation, India had already created a robust relationship with the Kim regime and together with its booming relationship with South Korea, it has the potential to play a larger role in economic partnership which will pave way for stability in North Korea.

The History
The two countries went to war in 1950 when soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army invaded the South. Although the armed conflict ended three years later in 1953, with the signing of an armistice agreement, no formal peace treaty was ever signed, and they remained In a state of war.

The landmark announcement followed a day heavy with symbolism and moments of what appeared to be genuine warmth between the two leaders, as the South Korean government put into action a program it had been preparing and rehearsing for weeks.
The stage is now set for Kim’s meeting with US President Donald Trump, due to take place later this year.

Korea can be a big success story for the Trump administration., Trump tweeted all Americans “should be very proud of what is now taking place in Korea!”
“After a furious year of missile launches and nuclear testing, a historic meeting between North and South Korea,” he said. “Good things are happening, but only time will tell

While in the coming days the real story and the deal with Kim, will come out and the real implementation of denuclearisation will have to be implemented, but for history books this is a giant leap for success of diplomacy which can not be ignored.
