Sandra Bullock’s ‘Ocean’s 8’ tops Box Office with $41.5M weekend

Date:

In its debut weekend, Ocean’s 8, starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna and Awkafina, earned a strong $41.5 million.

That gives it a decent 2.63x multiplier and the top debut weekend for the Ocean’s franchise. It sold fewer tickets this weekend than any of the previous Stephen Soderbergh-directed Ocean’s movies.

The Gary Ross-directed sequel cost $70 million to produce, much below the unadjusted budgets ($85m, $110m and $85m) of the Soderbergh-directed Ocean’s movies which opened with $38m in 2001, $39m in 2004 and $36m in 2007.

It will be interesting to see how it fairs against The Incredibles 2 and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Ocean’s 8 opened alongside New Line’s Life of the Party ($50 million this weekend), STX’s I Feel Pretty (which tripled its $16m debut weekend) and Lionsgate and MGM’s Overboard ($80m worldwide on a $12m budget) shows that not only are women box office poison, but also there is enough of an audience to justify more than one flick aimed at adult women per season.
