Massive Dust Storm, Rain Hits Mumbai: 8 Dead, 64 Injured After Metal Hoarding Collapses; High-Level Inquiry Ordered

Mumbai: Mumbai experienced a massive dust storm on Monday, the western suburbs of Borivali, Kandivali, Malad, and Goregaon witnessed heavy rainfall. The downpour came with its share of consequences, as reports of power outages surfaced from various parts of Mumbai.

  • A tragic incident unfolded in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar after a massive hoarding collapsed amid strong winds, leaving eight dead. Sixty-four people have been admitted to the hospital, with multiple others trapped, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani confirmed.
  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde arrived at the Ghatkopar hoarding collapse incident to take stock of the situation.
  • Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.
  • The BMC stated that it is going to file a complaint against advertising company Ego Media for the incident. A complaint will be filed by registering an FIR under the Disaster Management Act, the BMC Public Relations Office said.
  • The NDRF team is present at the spot and the rescue is underway.
  • An under-construction metal parking lot collapsed on a road in Mumbai’s Wadala area causing damage to eight to 10 vehicles and trapping one person inside a car, BMC said. The BMC said that the rescue operation of the trapped person is in progress by the Mumbai Fire Brigade.
  • Earlier, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) temporarily suspended flight operations for around 66 min due to low visibility and gusty winds and operations resumed at 5.03 pm, said an official statement from Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL).
  • The sudden change in weather brought traffic traffic to a standstill as commuters took shelter during the storm. Strong winds and rain were witnessed in Ghatkopar, Bandra Kurla, Dharavi area of Mumbai.
  • The weather department said that the districts of Palghar and Thane will see thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate to intense spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 50-60 km/hr are very likely to occur at isolated places in the next 3-4 hours.
  • Trees in several areas fell due to strong winds. A tree in the Aroli Sector 5 district of Navi Mumbai, a neighbouring city of Mumbai, fell over a busy road. Though the strong winds persisted across the city, commuters parked their cars at a safe distance and traffic stopped. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
