Delhi has ‘reverse vending machine’ to fight plastic pollution

Date:

The Delhi government is taking steps to make the city cleaner and plastic free. The North Delhi Municipal Council proposes to install ‘reverse vending machines’ in 9 hubs – Kamla Nagar market, Gaffar Market, Minto Road, Netaji Subhash Palace, D block market Prashant Vihar, Rohini, East Patel Nagar and Vishwavidyalaya metro.

Three reverse vending machines were insatalled in Connaught Place,a year ago. When a person deposited waste in these machines, Rs 1, Rs 2, Rs 5 and Rs 10 were deposited to their e-wallet.

The aim of setting up the reverse vending machines is to reduce wastage. Shoppers in major market and hubs can put the waste in these machines instead of throwing them indiscriminately. These machines have also been installed in five places in Lucknow and nine in Jharkhand.

The machines have automatic waste collection mechanism and segregate waste thereby reducing human efforts.

The concept of giving something in return is the USP of  the reverse vending machine and will supposedly help run this three month pilot
