One in five IAS and IPS posts are lying vacant

More than one in every five post in the Indian Administrative Services (IAS) is vacant. The number is almost similar for the Indian Police Service (IPS).

Over all 2,400 posts of IAS and IPS officers are lying vacant in the country, the government told the parliament on Thursday.

For IAS, of the 6,553 sanctioned posts, about 1,449 or 22.11% are vacant. The number for the IPS is – 970 vacancies or 19.64% of the total 4,940 posts. The Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

“The occurrence of vacancies and its filling up is an ongoing process,” Singh informed the Upper House, while responding to a question about when these vacant posts would be filled.
