Rains lay siege on Gurugram roads, some schools shut

It seems the Millennium City is under siege once again with heavy rains striking the city in the wee hours of Tuesday.

At least two schools in Gurugram declared a holiday on Tuesday due to heavy rainfall and waterlogging. Lotus Valley School in Sector 51 said “Due to heavy downpour and waterlogging, we are forced to close the school. Heritage Xperiential Learning School in sector 62 declared a holiday for some classes. “Please note that the Junior Programme will be closed today due to heavy rainfall,” Heritage school said in an email to parents.

In Sushant Lok I vehicles were stalled on the roads due to waterlogging leading to traffic jams. In Ardee City the accumulated water covered parked cars, leaving only a part of the windscreen and the roof visible.

 

Roads around Jharsa village were completely underwater, as seen in the video posted by one Twitter user.

 

Traffic movement was severely hampered in Bijwasan area.

 

Skymet had predicted heavy rainfall in the National Capital Region on Tuesday.

Water started collecting in some parts of the NCR as early as 4 am on Tuesday.

 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted heavy rain at isolated places over Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Sub­Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Konkan, Goa, Telangana and Coastal Karnataka on Tuesday.

Heavy rain accompanied with lightning was reported around Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, Teen Murti Bhavan and R.K. Puram among other areas.

In the national capital waterlogging has been reported from Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area and Munirka.


Heavy rain accompanied with lightning was also reported around Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, Teen Murti Bhavan and R.K. Puram among other areas.

According to the MeT, rainfall between 2.5 to 15.5mm is considered as ‘light’ while rainfall between 15.6 to 64.4mm in a 24-hour period is considered ‘moderate’. Rainfall above 64.5mm is considered as ‘heavy’.
