Remembering the great poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan

Today marks the birth anniversary of the famous ‘Madhusala’ poet – Harivansh Rai Bachchan.

Harivansh Rai Srivastava, known by his pet name Bachchan, was an Indian poet of the Nayi Kavita literary movement of early 20th century Hindi literature.

Amitabh Bachchan shared a poem with a post on twitter. “27th Nov 1907.. Birth of Pujya Babuji! During the world Yudh II, he was a teacher at Allāhābād University, and a member of UOTC! University Officers Training Corps, at that time wrote: “I’ll run both pens and guns; Such fellows in the world are less found”, Amitabh wrote in the tweet.

From 1941 to 1952 he taught in the English Department at the Allahabad University and after that he spent the next two years at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, Cambridge University completing a PhD on W.B. Yeats.

The famous Hindi writer went to study at Cambridge University, he changed the name of ‘Bachchan’ to Harivanshirai Bachchan at the end of his name. Since then, ‘Bachchan’ is replaced by ‘Srivastava’.

Bachchan’s first collection of poems ‘Thy defeat’ came in 1929 but he got recognition from popular poem collection ‘Madhusha’.

In 1976, Harivansh received the Padma Bhushan award. On January 18, 2003, Harivansh passed away in Mumbai but his books and poems still remain in the hearts of literary lovers.
