Cars to get costlier in Delhi; here’s why

Date:

Delhi Transport Department has approved a recommendation for a hike by three municipal corporations of the city.

According to the order, in 2019, the car buyers will have to pay higher one-time parking charges. Based on the cost of a vehicle, the one-time parking charge for different categories of commercial vehicles will rise from Rs 2,500-400 to Rs 10,000-25000.

The one-time parking charge for private cars and SUVs is Rs 4,000 currently. With the new order in place, the charges will range between Rs 6,000 and Rs 75,000 – 18 times the existing rate.

The new parking charges will be applicable from January 1, 2019, said Transport Commissioner Varsha Joshi on her last day in office. However, Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot has denied any information on the matter.

“We will meet the chief minister and the transport minister on Monday against the hike because it will impact us negatively. If need be, we will resort to a strike also,” PTI quotes Shyam Lal Gola, spokesperson of State Transport Authority Operators Ekta Manch.

Though the order is expected to the boost finances of the civic bodies, the transport department will have to take the fall as the sale of vehicles may shift to the neighbouring states due the price variance.
