Superwoman Lilly Singh becomes the first woman to host her own late night show on NBC

Date:

YouTube star Lilly Singh, who goes by the name Superwoman, is ready to take on the mostly male world of late night TV.

Singh will debut a new late night show in the 1:35 am slot in September called ‘A Little Late with Lilly Singh’, NBC announced on Thursday. Interestingly, Lilly Singh’s debut is breaking stereotypes since not only is she the first Indian origin host but also the first woman to host a show on NBC.

‘An Indian-Canadian woman with her own late night show? Now that is a dream come true,’ Singh said in a statement. ‘I’m thrilled to bring it to life on NBC, and I hope my parents consider this to be as exciting as a grandchild.’

The comedian appeared on ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon Thursday to talk about her new role at NBC.

‘Your girl is getting her own NBC late night show,’ Singh said on the telecast. ‘And to clarify, it’s not Jimmy’s slot.’

NBC’s ‘Late Night’ host Seth Meyers also made an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show’ clutching glasses of champagne to welcome Singh to the club.

The announcement comes a month after the news that the late-night host Carson Daly would step away from his 1:30 a.m. show, ‘Last Call With Carson Daly.’

Ms. Singh has been uploading YouTube videos since 2010 and has amassed more than 14 million subscribers. Her skits and monologues, which regularly draw from her Indian heritage and experience as a child of immigrants, cover a range of topics, including dating (especially intercultural dating), womanhood and friendship.
