SC tells poll panel to produce orders clearing PM Modi speeches after Congress alleges bias

Date:

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Election Commission to place clean chits to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Modi on record after the Congress accused the poll panel of bias.

The top court will hear the case relating to model code of conduct violations on Wednesday.

The petitioner, Congress MP Sushmita Dev, has listed 11 alleged violations by Modi and Shah, and sought direction to the commission to act on them.

Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who appeared for the petitioner, told the court on Monday that there were numerous instances where the poll watchdog had found remarks by a political leader to be a poll code violation but found no violation that a similar allegation was leveled against Modi-Shah duo.

On Saturday, the apex poll body cleared a speech by Modi under the model code. This pertained to his rally in Patan, Gujarat, on April 21, when he claimed that he had warned Pakistan of dire consequences if it did not return Indian Air Force pilot Abhinandan Varthaman.

Last week, the EC was directed by the apex court to dispose of all complaints of poll code violation filed by the Congress against Modi and Shah by Monday, May 6.
