Draft Education Policy seeks to bring in 5+3+3+4 schooling format in place of 10+2 model

Date:

In major education reform, the draft of National Educational Policy has suggested  5+3+3+4 curriculum and pedagogy instead of the existing 10+2.

The new committee led by the Chairman Dr. Kasturirangan submitted the draft to Union Human Resource Development Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ and Minister of State for HRD, Sanjay Shamrao Dhotre.

The committee has also recommended Extension of Right to Education Act 2009 to cover children of ages 3 to 18.

10+2 system in common terms means grades 1-12 system. In this system, classes 1-5 are the primary stage, classes 6-8 the upper primary, classes 9-10 are the secondary stage and classes 11-12 the higher secondary.

In 5+3+3+4 curriculum and pedagogical structure, the stages are:

Foundational Stage (age 3-8 yrs): 3 years of pre-primary plus Grades 1-2
Preparatory Stage (8-11 years): Grades 3-5
Middle Stage (11-14 years): Grades 6-8
Secondary Stage (14-18 years): Grades 9-12

According to the draft, the higher education institutions will be driven by two Missions -Mission Nalanda & Mission Takshashila.

The committee also suggested for 4-year integrated stage-specific B.Ed. programme to be the minimum degree qualification for teachers.

The existing NEP was framed in 1986 and revised in 1992.
