India to release a Rs 550 coin, here is why

India plans to issue a commemorative coin of Rs 550 to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev which falls in November.

One side of the coin shall bear the picture of Gurudwara Shri Ber Sahib, with ‘550th Prakash Utsav of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’ engraved in Hindi and English languages. The coin will weigh 35 grams.

The year 1496 and 2019 will also be inscribed. 1496, the year when the founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak Dev Ji, was born will also be inscribed on the coin along with the current year (2019). Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the first of 10 Sikh Gurus.

The other side of the coin will have Lion Capitol of the Ashoka Pillar in the centre with the phrase ‘Satyameva Jayate’ inscribed on it.  ‘Bharat’ will be inscribed in Devnagri script while ‘India’ will be inscribed in English on the coin.

The Indian cabinet announced in November 2018 the construction of Kartarpur corridor in the honour of the 550th birth anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Devji.

The corridor will be built from Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district to the International Border. This corridor is essential to facilitate devotees from India to visit the famous Gurudwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur in Pakistan.

Along the corridor, the railways plan a train on the route of various holy places associated with Sikhism.
