Veteran actor-playwright Girish Karnad passes away

Multilingual actor and playwright Girish Karnad (81) passed away at his residence in Bengaluru on Monday. He was suffering from an illness for a long time and passed away due to multiple organ failure.

Girish Karnad was born in Maharashtra, on May 19, 1938. His mother was a young widow, who married Dr Raghunath Karnad.

PM Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind also shared their condolences on social media.

Karnad made his acting and screenwriting debut in a Kannada film titled ‘Samskara’. The turning point of his career was playing the role of Swami’s father in the serial ‘Malgudi Days’ after which he became a household name.

He also received the Jnanpith Award which is the highest literary honour conferred in India, the prestigious Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards.

Karnad has worked in many notable Hindi films such as ‘Pukar’, ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’, ‘Iqbal’, ‘Manthan’ and ‘Dor’.
